Department of Chemical
Engineering

Brief

The Department of Chemical Engineering at Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi started in the 1998/1999 session with an initial intake of 26 students. The number of Undergraduate Students as at 2014/2015 stood at 293 students with 23 qualified full-time academic staff with specialization in various fields of Chemical Engineering.

The students of this Department commence their study by pursuing the basic general courses in Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, and General Studies for their first year. During the second year, they pursue courses in general engineering from the following:

Civil, Mechanical/Production, and Electrical including Introduction to Chemical Engineering and General Studies. From the third year onward, the students are now properly resident in the Department for an in-depth study of various fields of specialization in Chemical Engineering.

At the end of second and third year the students proceed on Student Workshop Experience Programme (SWEP) and Student Industrial Workshop Experience Scheme I (SIWES I) respectively for two months. In the second semester of fourth year they proceed for a six-month SIWES II, after which they return for the fifth year and final year in the University. During the final year, they were engaged on Design and Research Projects solely to test the team work capability, integration of practical and theoretical knowledge, information search and bench scale utilization of raw material processes.

Chemical Engineering is the profession concerned with production of large volumes of chemicals from their basic raw materials using principles of Engineering, Chemistry and Economics. The aim of the Department is to give the students an understanding of the basic principles of this branch of engineering and to enable them take a lead in the realization of local content dream in this field.

Not only will the graduates of the Department acquire the breadth of knowledge necessary for technological innovation, but also the entire staff both academic and non-academic are utilized efficiently and effectively.

Aims & Objectives

The objectives of the Department are:

  • To train students that have competence in the development of ideas and concepts for the solution of engineering problems using divergent thinking and induction of chemical engineering principles and applications to solve societal problems.
  • To train students that will use appropriate technology to develop the nation’s chemical industries.
  • To train students that will exercise initiative, judgment and creative ability in the use of Chemical Engineering principles and techniques for the development of our locally sourced raw materials.
  • To expose students to the practical aspect of their training through carefully designed and supervised practical projects in the laboratories in order to be self-reliant.

The students who successfully complete the programme of study are awarded Bachelor of Engineering, B. Eng. (Hons.) in Chemical Engineering.

The Philosophy of the Department is to train high level manpower with technical know-how in the discipline of Chemical Engineering for the advancement of indigenous technologies for the benefit of mankind and the nation at large.

Mission Statement

The mission of the Department of Chemical Engineering, Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi is to train knowledgeable Chemical Engineers of sound scientific foundation that will support and expedite industrial development and national self-reliance.

Vision Statement

The vision of Department of Chemical Engineering, Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi is to become known as the centre of excellence in Chemical Engineering where quality scientific and technological knowledge for advancement of mankind is achieved.

Chemical Engineering is a profession dedicated to the service of humanity through research and development, design, construction and operation of chemical plants to make chemical products. It has a strong base in the basic sciences, namely chemistry, physics and mathematics.

Almost every facet of industry employs chemical engineers: environment, synthetic rubber, textile, petrochemicals, peaceful use of atomic energy, biochemical engineering, etc. Graduates may be recruited in the production, marketing and all aspects of technical and commercial management within the chemical industry.

Many Chemical Engineers also find employment in the oil and gas industries and others such as food, plastic, detergents, iron and steel, paper-making, pharmaceutical, mineral, battery, etc. Other openings lie in water authorities, agriculture, government and academics.
