Department of Geology
Brief
The Department of Applied Geology, ATBU Bauchi was established in 1982 as one of the Programmes in the then School of Science of the then Federal University of Technology Bauchi.
Following the change in the university’s structure in 2014, the name “Department of Applied Geology and Faculty of Science” were adopted, jettisoning the former “Geology Programme and School of Science” structure respectively.
The department’s mission is to produce the manpower required to explore and exploit the nation’s Petroleum, mineral and water resources as well as solve Environmental Issues. Training is geared towards production of Applied Geologists with strong field bias towards fieldwork so as to blend faultlessly into the rigors of Academics and finesse of Industry.
Since its establishment thirty- three years ago, the department has grown in both student population, staff and teaching facilities. Today, despite the high staff turnover in recent years, we have modest faculty strength of 19 comprising 2 professors, 3 Associate professors, 1 visiting Lecturer (Reader), 1 senior lecturer, 1 lecturer II; 6 Assistant Lecturers and 5 Graduate Assistants. Our current undergraduate student population stands at 240 with additional 15 postgraduate students.
Our laboratory facilities have improved over the years with the acquisition of the AAS and the reconditioning of the Euromex polarizing microscope with high resolution lenses equipped with camera for taking photomicrographs. Our thin-section-making workshop has continued to function and provides the much-needed thin sections for undergraduate teaching and postgraduate research. The number of Technical staff manning our laboratories have grown to Nine (9). The department operates with Two (2) Support/Administrative staff.
An Earth Sciences Library (Chevron assisted) has continued to improve in the quality and quantity of Books and journal publications available.
The Head of Department (HOD) is the administrative head of the Department. He is responsible for the day to day running of the department. He reports to the Vice Chancellor directly or through the DVC (Academic) or the Dean of the faculty of Science as the case may be. There are three groups of staff in the department: Academic, Technical and Secretarial/clerical staff. All are responsible to the HOD. The following extra-curricular functions are shared among the academic staff as appointed by the HOD.

The department offers study leading to the award of B.Tech (Applied Geology) Degree.
The duration of the degree is five years comprising of ten academic semesters. Students’ activities during this period include undertaking compulsory fieldwork at various levels of study, Practical sessions, lectures, Tutorials, presentations and independent researches and Assignments.
In the penultimate year, students proceed on industrial attachment to a related industry of their interest and strength from among the varied fields of Geology.
In their Final year, students are expected to embark on a supervised research which must include an independent mapping and produce a thesis integrating the body of knowledge and skills so far acquired.
The department’s undergraduate curriculum is an all encompassing one introducing students to all the fields of geology while preparing them for graduate study in a specialized field of geology or setting them up for a promising career in the industry.
The Department of Applied Geology offers postgraduate study and research leading to the degree of Master of Science (M.Sc) in Economic Geology/Mineral Exploration and Sedimentology/Petroleum Geology and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Sedimentology/Petroleum Geology, Economic Geology/Mineral Exploration and Environmental Geochemistry
