Department of Histopathology

HOD: Dr. Dauda Eneyamire Suleiman, (MBBS, MWACP, FMCPath)

Brief

The Department of Histopathology of the Faculty of Basic Clinical Sciences, is one of the 5 departments in the faculty. It was formally established in 2018 in preparation for receiving the first set of clinical medical students. The Department deals with the study of diseased human tissues during life and at death, using mainly gross and light microscopic examination techniques, including post mortem examinations (autopsy). Additional ancillary immunologic and molecular techniques may also be employed where appropriate.
The discipline of pathology is a bridging discipline between the Basic Medical Sciences and Clinical Medicine, involving the integration of both basic science and clinical practice devoted to the study of structural and functional changes in cells, tissues and organs that underlie disease. It is concerned with the aetiology, pathogenesis, morphologic changes, functional derangements and clinical manifestations of diseases. We are dedicated to the scientific study of tissue structure and disease processes, providing essential diagnostic, teaching, and research support to the college, affiliated teaching hospital, and the wider community
Our core mandates include the following:
• Serve as a premier training ground for undergraduate medical students, postgraduate trainees, and allied health professionals in histopathology, cytology, and related disciplines
• Promote excellence in teaching, learning, and research focused on tissue-based diagnosis, pathology techniques, and biomedical science
• Provide accurate, timely diagnostic histopathology and cytology services to support patient care, teaching, and research
• Foster multidisciplinary collaboration with other departments to advance clinical understanding and better health outcomes.

Aims & Objectives

Philosophy, Vision and Mission
The objective of the histopathology course for undergraduate students is to ensure that the student learns and understands the general principles of the pathological basis of diseases as well as the pathological changes seen in common disease states affecting organs and organ systems.

Admission requirements
As part of the major contributing departments to the MBBS training programme, entry requirements are as stated in the general college/university requirements for admission into the MBBS programme. The department also supports the academic requirements of the award of the Bachelor of Nursing Sciences (BSc. Nursing) programme of the faculty of allied health sciences
