BRIEF ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT
INTRODUCTION
Chemical Pathology is the branch of Pathology that deals with the biochemical basis of disease and the use of biochemical tests for screening, diagnosis, prognosis, and management. It is the pillar on which evidence-based diagnosis and management of patients are rooted.
Chemical pathologists have two important clinical roles. The first is liaising with healthcare professionals such as general consultant, General practitioners, nurses, non-consultants and other consultant doctors to provide advice on which test to use and how to interpret the result of the test when investigating a patient. Chemical Pathologist is also responsible for the provision of reliable analytical services. This includes measuring makers of liver and kidney function, hormones, drugs and tumour markers.
Chemical Pathology is taught mainly by Chemical Pathologists, who are medically qualified graduates with postgraduate training in Chemical Pathology or Laboratory Medicine.
Professionals like Pathologists, Research Scientists, and Laboratory Scientists with specialization in chemical pathology, Laboratory Technicians and other supporting staff are employed in the department to complement service provision.

THE ORGANIZATION OF CHEMICAL PATHOLOGY DEPARTMENT
The functions of the Chemical Pathology Department are teaching, research and clinical services.
The Department is administered by a Head, who is medically qualified (MBBS, FMC Path, or its equivalent) and appointed by the Vice Chancellor of the University and Chief Medical Director of the Teaching Hospital)
The Head of Department (HOD) oversees the affairs of the Department and reports directly to the Dean of the Faculty of Basic Clinical Sciences.
The staff of the Department can belong to the Faculty of Basic Clinical Sciences of the University, the Teaching Hospital, or both. The academic staff consists of Professors, Readers, Senior Lecturers, and Lecturers l and II.
The Consultants are academic staff of the University as well as honorary clinical staff of the Teaching Hospital. Their appointments are based on their subspecialties.
Each division has Resident doctors in training to specialize in Pathology. They are either employed by the Hospital or University and all function as one.
Technical staff includes Laboratory Scientists (who are appointed according to their specialization), Laboratory Technicians, and Laboratory Assistants who are responsible for carrying out the technical aspects of the laboratory work.
