Brief
1.0 Introduction
The discipline of Haematology and Blood Transfusion for medical students in Pathology/Laboratory Medicine posting in Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU) Bauchi requires that students have adequate exposure to Haematology through lectures, practical, tutorials and some basic clinical demonstrations. Thus, this handbook is produced as a guide to both staff and students on the expectations and regulations during posting in Haematology and Blood Transfusion.
The department aims to produce doctors with adequate clinical and academic know-how for the prevention, diagnosis and management of haematological diseases as well as the provision of safe blood and blood products required in clinical practice at the end of their training in ATBU medical school.
The handbook consists of the lectures, seminars, practical to cover in various postings, continuous assessments, examinations and marking schemes to serve as a guide to both students and staff of the department.
The department wishes all students a rewarding experience during their postings in Haematology and Blood Transfusion.

3.0 Composition of the Departmental Board of Examiners
For the professional examination in Haematology and Blood Transfusion, there shall be a Departmental Board of Examiners which shall consist of the following;

Two representatives of the Dean, not below the rank of Lecturer II nominated from other Departments within the Faculty of Basic Clinical Sciences——–Members
Departmental Secretary or any academic staff so appointed——-Secretary
There shall also be External Examiners comprising of distinguished scholars in their field of competence and shall not have been a full time academic member of the ATBU Bauchi during the two academic years imm3diately preceding the proposed date of appointment as an external examiner.
4.0 Philosophy of the Department
The Department of Haematology, ATBU Bauchi has the philosophy of providing comprehensive training, research and services in Haematology and Blood Transfusion.
5.0 Mission of the Department
The mission of the Department is to provide adequate knowledge, research and services in Haematology and Blood Transfusion that will effectively contribute to the attainment of the mission of the College of Medical Sciences, ATBU Bauchi.
6.0 Vision of the Department
The Department has the vision of hobbling the Haematology and Blood Transfusion education, research and services in Nigeria and Africa as a whole.

8.0 Objectives of the Department
The Department of Haematology and Blood Transfusion has the following objectives:
i. To provide qualitative knowledge of Haematology and Blood Transfusion to medical students through lectures, tutorials, practical and seminars.
ii. To enhance research and collaborations on the basic and clinical aspects of Haematology and Blood Transfusion with the local and international agencies/institutions.
ii. To promote the integration of Blood Transfusion services with the regional, national and international blood transfusion services.
9.0 Activities of the Department of Haematology and Blood Transfusion
i. Teaching and Training of Haematology and Blood Transfusion to Medical students, interns and other health personnel through lectures, seminars, tutorials, practical and clinical demonstrations.
ii. Periodic seminars and workshops to members of staff and students on the recent and standard practice of Haematology and Blood Transfusion.
iii. Daily clinical activities that include 24hours blood banking services, routine and special laboratory tests in the Haematology laboratory, Haematology Day Care services where patients with Haematological malignancies receive chemotherapy, transfusion services to patients with anaemias and other conditions requiring blood transfusion, weekly specialist clinic on Thursdays, twice weekly consultant ward rounds (Tuesdays and Fridays) and daily specialist consultations as requested from other departments in form of consults.
iv. The Department is also engaged in collaborative researches with other departments and units in the University and Teaching Hospital its doors are widely opened to collaboration with other universities and research institutes within and outside the country.
15.0 Continuous Assessment (CA)
Continuous Assessment (CA) will be carried out at the end of each course, practical sessions and tutorials/seminars. The cumulative marks for the CA will be driven from the following;
a). Cumulative continuous assessment tests 200 marks
b). Cumulative practical and tutorials/seminars sessions 50 marks
c). Attendance 50 marks
Total marks for CA = 300 marks (30% of the overall marks of the professional examination)
16.0 Regulations for Professional Examinations In the Department of Haematology and Blood Transfusion
16.1 Preamble
These regulations are not exhaustive. They are intended to supplement the University regulations or to replace those sections of the University regulations which do not apply to Professional examinations in the College of Medical Sciences, Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Bauchi.
16.2 Conditions for admission to Professional Examination in the Department of Haematology and Blood Transfusion
For a student to qualify for admission to write professional examination in Haematology and Blood Transfusion, he/she must:
i). Be duly registered with the university and pay any fee prescribed by the Senate
ii) Must have cumulative attendance of at least 75% of all the lectures, seminars/tutorials and practical during the posting.
16.3 Grading for Professional Examination in the Department of Haematology and Blood Transfusion
For the professional examination in Haematology and Blood Transfusion, the guide for examiners outlined below shall apply;
a) PAPER I: Two hundred (200) multiple choice questions (MCQs) with five (5) options A-E of True or False types with an open marking system +1 for correct answer, -1 or -1/2 for wrong answers (as the case may be) and 0 for no response. The total mark is 200.
b) PAPER II: Five (5) essay type questions (40) marks each using closed marking system with some score range of 12 (minimum) to 28 (maximum) in each question. The sum total marks for this paper is 200.
c) PAPER III: This composes a total of 20 spots in steeple chase passion comprising of results interpretation, slides review/morphology, practical activtity (performing/reading PCV, Blood grouping, etc). Each spot is 10 marks and the total score of the practical examination (Paper III) is 200 marks.
d) ORAL EXAMINATION: Using closed marking system. The total score is 100 marks with some score range of 25-65 marks.
e) Weighing For Various Papers in Haematology and Blood Transfusion
The following parts of the examination will contribute to the final total marks for Haematology and Blood Transfusion examination as follows;
a). Paper I (MCQs) 200 marks
b). Paper II (Essay) 200 marks
c). Paper III (Practical) 200 marks
d). Oral examination 100 marks
e). Continuous Assessment 300 marks
Total Score 1,000 marks
f) To Pass/Resit/Repeat in Haematology and Blood Transfusion
To pass the Professional Examination in Haematology, a candidate must score at least 50% out of the total 1000marks (i.e 500marks). A score of less than 50% is a fail and the candidate has to resit the Haematology examination as stipulated in the College examination guideline. Failure to score 50% in the resit examination by a candidate qualifies him/her to repeat Haematology and Blood Transfusion.
16.4 Examination Misconduct
The following attitudes by students during examination are considered as misconduct;
i). Impersonation at Examination: This may involve exchange of examination number/names on answer sheets or the intentional use of someone else’s examination number.
ii). Exchange of relevant materials in the examination which may involve theft/removal of examination scripts or materials.
iii). Introduction of relevant foreign materials and cheat notes in to the examination venue.
iv). Mischief by fire to examination scripts or materials before, during and after examinations.
v). Facilitating or abetting cheating.
vi). Writing on question paper or scraps of paper.
vii). Non submission or incomplete submission of answer scripts.
viii). Speaking or conversation amongst students during examination.
ix). Copying from cheat notes, handsets, tablets, electronic device or any other source.
x). Theft/removal of examination material(s).
xi). Any other act that is captured as misconduct in the College or University guideline.
16.5 Penalties For Examination Misconducts
At the discretion of the Chief Invigilator, a candidate may be asked to leave the examination venue if he/she is disturbing the examination process.
The chief invigilator shall report immediately to the Provost and Dean through the Faculty Examiner Officer or after the particular examination session as the case may be.
Any candidate found in examination misconduct shall sign submit to the Chief invigilator a written statement. Failure to do that shall be regarded as an admission of the charge against the candidate.
The Chief invigilator is to forward a report to the Provost and Dean through the Faculty Exam Officer. Such reports together with exhibits are to be sealed and kept in safe custody.
Further action shall be taken by the College Board and subsequently the senate as in the ATBU Bauchi Examination guideline and penalties for examination misconducts.
17.0 Dress Code
All students must strictly adhere to the University dress code. However, in addition to that, College of Medical Sciences Considers compliance with infection control standards and health and safety requirements as well as the need for students to portray a professional image at all times.
It is not acceptable for students to wear denim jeans, unacceptably tight or revealing clothing, leggings or clothing bearing unacceptable slogans.
Students must be properly dressed during lectures and must wear laboratory coat with cover shoes during practical. All students are expected to appear corporate during clinical demonstrations, seminars and tutorials with name tag on their ward coats.
All students are expected to always carry university ID card for the purpose if identification and also for security concerns.
