Brief

The Department is one of the major departments in the Faculty of Clinical Sciences, College of Medical Sciences. Like other clinical departments, it is located in the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital campus. It primarily provides academic, professional and research training for Medical students, Resident Doctors, Midwives and other allied health professionals. The department is accredited for the full training of postgraduate Doctors by the West African College of Surgeons (WACS) and the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria (NPMCN). A Curriculum has been developed by the department for research degrees of Master of Philosophy (MPhil) and Doctor of Philosophy ( DPhil) in Obstetrics, Gynaecology, Perinatology and Reproductive Sciences.
Medical Students are expected to rotate through the department at 500 level. The academic program of the department is carried out over a period of 24 weeks which is split into two; 12 weeks Junior posting and 12 weeks Senior posting. Didactic lectures are given between 8:00am and 9:00am daily. The clinical activities commence after the lectures for the rest of the day. Call duty hours start from 4.00pm on week days while on weekends and public holidays the call starts from 8.00am.

Aims & Objectives

Objectives
The students trained in this Department are expected, on qualification to:
1. Have knowledge of the normal anatomy and function of the female reproductive organs and disease conditions.
2. Be in a position to organize comprehensive reproductive health care services and function effectively as a leader of the health care for women
3. Be able to recognize the pattern and presentation of the common Obstetric and Gynaecological diseases and judiciously use available modern diagnosis and therapeutic facilities.
4. Be able to recognize his/her limits during the care of a patient and refer as necessary
5. Be interested in life-long learning via postgraduate training, research and continuing medical education. 

Philosophy of the department
The guiding principle of the department is utilisation of holistic approach to train students to become medical practitioners who will be able to practice the art and science of Obstetrics and Gynaecology in and outside Nigeria in all its ramifications within the level of their competence. 

Clinical Postings
This is the main thrust of the department and the major way it imparts to students; the knowledge, clinical skills, competencies and desirable behaviour expected of a physician. The department operates the sessional system for medical students and accepts students at any time within the session. Points of clinical activities for the students include: Antenatal wards, Post-operative ward, Postnatal ward, Delivery suites, Gynaecology operating theatre, Gynaecology emergency unit and Gynaecology wards. Others include antenatal clinics, Gynaecological clinics, Ultrasound room, Colposcopy unit and Family Planning unit
