Brief
BRIEF ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT
The Building Department was established in 1991 as an undergraduate Degree Programme in the Faculty of Environmental Technology. The department has reviewed its programme to meet the NUC Bench Mark Minimum Academic Standards and the professional demands of the Council of Registered Builders of Nigeria (CORBON).
The Building Department is one of the Academic units in the Faculty of Environmental Technology of the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Bauchi. The unit is administered by the head of department in collaboration with the Dean of the faculty and the departmental Board members. The department has the departmental Board as the decision-making body of the Department with the Head of department as the Chairman and all Academic Staff as members. The Board takes decisions on all academic matters as directed by the University Senate and Administration. Academic staff are appointed as Level advisers to all students to properly guide them in their academic work and other relevant matters.

Aims & Objectives
AIM AND OBJECTIVES OF BUILDING DEPARTMENT
The aim of a degree programme in building is to train competent graduates in building construction process, its management and maintenance. In addition, the programme should provide sufficient general knowledge and specified skills/techniques, which will enable the professional builder to manage and control the technological, economic, human and material resources involved in the building production process and to become Building Production Expert.
Objectives
The objectives of building department in A.T.B.U. Bauchi are:
Train students to interact effectively with owners, developers, other allied professionals, manufacturers, suppliers, and other stakeholders in the construction industry including artisans and craftsmen.
To fully equipt students for public and private sector services and self-employment, as well as be acceptable for registration with Council of Registered Builders of Nigeria (CORBON) and other professional bodies.
To groom building students in the art, science, technology/techniques and culture of building maintenance technology, maintenance management and facility management.

PROGRAMME DURATION
REQUIREMENTS FOR THE AWARD OF B.TECH. DEGREE INBUILDING
The programme is a full-time undergraduate course in Building of five- or four-year’s duration depending on the mode of entry leading to the award of a B.Tech. Degree in Building. The programme incorporates 12months of industrial training Broken down into SWEP, SIWES I and SIWES II. The minimum credit load should not fall below 197credit units for UTME and 162 credit units for DE students.
PHILOSOPHY OF THIS DEPARTMENT
The underlying philosophy of Building Department is to develop and advance the Science and practices of building. Building Technology involves building assembly/construction technology and techniques, buildability and maintainability analyses, building construction process and methodology in the areas of site management, contract management, financial management, building production and maintenance. A Building Technology graduate is therefore expected to devote substantial part of their lives to solving national problems of how to make Nigeria technologically truly independent and break new grounds in all aspects of building techniques, building production management, construction processes and building maintenance.
ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
Admission to the Department can be satisfied by meeting the general University admission requirements as well as passing the relevant Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (SSCE) or its equivalent in the relevant subjects. A candidate can also be admitted to higher levels by meeting the basic and other requirements as stated below.
a) ADMISSION TO 100 LEVEL
Admission to this level is by the general entrance examination organized by the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB). To be eligible for admission, candidates must pass the SSCE or its equivalent at credit levels passed in not less than five (5) subjects and in not more than two sittings in Mathematics, English Language, Physics, Chemistry and any one subject from, Biology, Technical Drawing, Economics, Geography, Building Construction, Land Surveying, bricklaying, and block laying.
b) ADMISSION TO 200 LEVEL
Candidates for direct entry to 200 level should have IJMB, HSC, GCE
(A) level or its equivalent with passes in Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry. In addition, candidates must satisfy the general entry requirements for admission to 100 level as listed above:
Holders of National Diploma (OND/HND) or its equivalent in Building, Architecture, Quantity Surveying and Civil Engineering may be considered for direct entry to 200 level provided that they obtained Upper Credit and the subject passed must include Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry, and other Science courses offered at OND/HND level.
Holders of IJMB must obtain a minimum of 10 points in Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry. All admissions must satisfy the entry requirement for 100 Level.
